Today, August 21, the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Pius X, Pope (1835-1914).
It is also the anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady of Knock, Ireland. On August 21, 1879, she appeared with St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist, and Jesus Christ in the form of a lamb — the Lamb of God — on an altar with a cross in the background at the parish church of the village of Knock in County Mayo. The miracle was witnessed by 15 people.
No words were spoken in the hours-long apparition, but it was received as an inspiring image of instruction and heavenly solidarity.
Pius X was an intrepid defender of the purity of Christian doctrine. He worked to restore the Church’s worship, so that people would find beauty in their public prayer. He spared no effort to propagate the practice of frequent and daily communion.
