Friends of the Rosary,
In today’s Gospel (Luke 9:7-9), we see that tetrarch Herod, after beheading John the Baptist, was interested and perplexed by what he was hearing about Jesus. St. Luke recounts what people were saying:
“John has been raised from the dead”;
others were saying, “Elijah has appeared”;
still others, “One of the ancient prophets has arisen.”
As Bishop Barron explains, political rulers (Cesar Augustus, Herod, Pontius Pilot, don’t come across well in the New Testament, and Jewish authorities are seen as corrupt. They all perceive Christ the Lord as a threat.
“Then you are a king?” Pilate asked him. Jesus replied, “My kingdom does not belong to this world.”
Of course, Jesus was concerned for the realities of politics and worldly powers, as well as the realm of sin, selfishness, hatred, and violence.
But his concerns were justice, peace, and right order, as they are in the Kingdom of Heaven.
