Friends of the Rosary,

Christ the Lord wants our whole heart, not just our goodness.

In the Gospel today (Matthew 19:16–22), a rich young man approached the Lord seeking eternal life, but when Jesus invited him to give up what he owned to follow Him, he walked away sadly. He could have been another apostle, like Matthew, but missed the opportunity.

“All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?”
Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go,
sell what you have and give to the poor,
and you will have treasure in heaven.
Then come, follow me.”
When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad,
for he had many possessions.”

Keeping the commandments matters, but discipleship goes deeper. Jesus lovingly exposes the one attachment that keeps a person from freedom. The question for prayer is: what would make me sad if Jesus asked me to surrender it?

This day of August 17 is traditionally associated with Saint Hyacinth of Poland, a Dominican missionary remembered for zeal, courage, and devotion to the Eucharist and Our Lady.

Ave Maria!
Come, Holy Spirit, come!
To Jesus through Mary!

Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.
Please give us the grace to respond with joy!
