Friends of the Rosary,
Today, memorials of Saint Cajetan, Priest, and Saint Sixtus II, Pope and Martyr, and his Companion Martyrs, the Lord reveals us powerful truths (Matthew 16:24-28):
“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,
take up his cross, and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world
and forfeit his life?
Or what can one give in exchange for his life?
For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory,
and then he will repay each according to his conduct.”
In this passage, Jesus makes the lesson plain: following Him is not just admiring Him, believing correct things about Him, or enjoying moments of spiritual light. It means taking up the cross with Him.
“Deny yourself” means dethroning the false self: pride, comfort, control, resentment, vanity, the need to win, the need to be seen.
That line, “Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it,” contradicts the extended idea, even in Christianity, that life is not about preserving comfort at all costs. It is about giving yourself away in love, obedience, humility, and fidelity. The paradox is that this surrender does not destroy us. It restores us.
