Friends of the Rosary,
Our Lord says in the Gospel today (Matthew 19:23-30):
“Everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters
or father or mother or children or lands
for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more,
and will inherit eternal life.
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”
Everything depends on God, including our own salvation. This is a fact of faith. Pride makes us forget that we are creatures of God, but grace reminds us of it.
We are not saved by possessions, status, intelligence, or self-control. In prayer, we have to wonder: am I acting as if I must be my own god, instead of trusting the Lord?
Today, August 18, is the feast of Saint Helena, mother of Constantine, remembered for her faith, care for the poor, and association with the discovery of the True Cross.
