Today, August 24, is the Feast of St. Bartholomew, Apostle. St. Bartholomew, also known as Nathaniel, was a doctor in Jewish law and a dear friend of St. Philip the Apostle.
He was one of the first disciples called by the Lord. On that initial meeting, Jesus delivered a glorious compliment: “Behold, an Israelite indeed in whom there is no guile!” Because of it, his mind was open to the truth. He went willingly with Philip to see Christ and recognized the Savior immediately as the Son of God.
After having received the gifts of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost, Bartholomew evangelized Asia Minor, northwestern India, and Greater Armenia. In the latter country, while preaching to idolaters, he was arrested and condemned to death.
Historically, today is the commemoration of Our Lady of Health of the Sick, celebrated on the Saturday before the last Sunday of August. This is one of the titles in the Litany to Our Lady of Loretto, and there is also a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Health of the Sick (La Salud) in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, Mexico.
In today’s Gospel (John 1:45–51), Jesus is revealing how he sees us before we fully see Him. Faith often begins with curiosity, honesty, and a willingness to come closer. Bartholomew reminds us that God can turn a skeptical heart into an apostle’s heart.
