Friends of the Rosary,

Today is the Memorial of St. Barnabas, Apostle.

Born in Cyprus, he embraced the faith soon after Christ’s death and became a member of the original Jerusalem community. He was a Hellenist, that is, a Jew who lived outside of Palestine and spoke Greek. His first name was Joseph; Barnabas (etymology: “son of consolation”) was a surname.

Barnabas first noteworthy deed was to sell his belongings and place the money at the feet of the apostles.

He presented St. Paul to the other Apostles. He was Paul’s companion and helper on his first missionary journey (about 45-48 A.D.)

He played an important role in the first expansion of Christianity beyond the Jewish world.

His name has been mentioned in the Canon of the Mass since ancient times.

Ave Maria!
Come, Holy Spirit, come!
To Jesus through Mary!

Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.
Please give us the grace to respond with joy!
